From comfort to chaos, Big Little Lies perfectly blends mature themes within its plotline. The series has had two seasons so far and is currently prepping for its third installment. Here’s what the author had to say regarding the upcoming season.
Liane Moriarty on Big Little Lies Season 3
Liane Moriarty, the author behind the original novel Big Little Lies, gave viewers a peek into the upcoming season. She shared an update as to what fans can potentially expect and hope to see in Season 3 as she spoke to Variety about the plot.
She said, “Ten years have passed, and the kids are now in high school, with all of the drama that accompanies teenhood (goodbye playdates, hello d—-, s–, and alcohol).” The synopsis continues: “Celeste’s mother-in-law, Mary Louise, is behaving oddly—is it old-age forgetfulness and forthrightness, or something more sinister?
The series focuses on the lives of three women, Madelaine, Celeste, and Jane. Their lives are intertwined and are shaped by the events happening around them. It brings out dysfunctionality and shows a rather dark side of relationships, be it romantic or familial. It brings out the dark, disturbing yet realistic portrayal of relationships and blends it with comedy and drama. With Perry Wright’s death in the past season, there are several loose threads yet to be addressed.
It will also feature a new character, possibly sinister, who might hold the key to the events happening around the characters. “When a strange man begins lurking around the school asking supposedly innocent questions, this tightly connected group of women must finally face the full repercussions of the big little truths they have and haven’t shared with their kids. Because the stakes are now much higher than not being invited to an ice-skating show—and the ice has never been thinner for any of them.”
Needless to say, the stakes will be high, as Moriarty described it best. The murder and the mayhem paved the way for something even more insidious that has yet to be unfurled in the coming season.
Season 3 of Big Little Lies is scheduled for release on August 25, 2026.
