According to a cover story done by Harper’s Bazaar, it was revealed that Anne Hathaway put forth strict demands. Meryl Streep told the magazine about the condition that ultimately changed the course of the film.
“I was struck by how not only beautiful and young—everyone seems young to me—but alarmingly thin the models were; I thought that all had been addressed years ago. Annie clocked it too, and she made a beeline to the producers about it, securing promises that the models in the show that we were putting together for our film would not be so skeletal! She’s a stand-up girl.”
Anne Hathaway has previously opened up about her struggles with body insecurities and image. The Princess Diaries actress had to lose weight for her role in The Devil Wears Prada to fit into the couture dresses, as some reports suggested.
In an interview with U.S. Weekly, Hathaway shed light on her process of losing weight: “I was thin for my height. I was basically stuck with fruit, vegetables, and fish. I wouldn’t recommend that. Emily Blunt and I would clutch at each other and cry because we were so hungry.”
It is reported that the costume designers told her to lose 10 lbs to fit into the designer dresses. The Devil Wears Prada shows Andy’s transformation through the makeover scene. It also walked through the process of the character losing weight to fit into two and four sizes.
