As of now, Jujutsu Kaisen Season 3’s harshest phase has begun. With Episode 8 released on February 26th, followed by Episode 9 coming out on March 5th, the Culling Game arc isn’t easing the audience in. Instead, the Jujutsu sorcerers are being thrown into chaos. What began as a political struggle within the clans has escalated to a far more sinister level. Here, the stakes are permanent, and the losses weigh heavily.

Culling Game arc signals emotional turning point

In the current storyline of the Culling Game, none of the present-timeline protagonists have died. However, for those who have read the manga, they already know that this relative peace won’t last. It’s likely that the worst is yet to come.

A good deal of the destruction seen so far within the Jujutsu Kaisen universe began with the “Perfect Preparation” arc. Not only was the destruction of the Zen’in clan at the hands of Maki Zen’in shocking, but it was also extremely personal. However, the turning point for this arc was the sacrifice of Mai. It was her death that freed her from her bond with her sister. This freed the Heavenly Restriction within Maki.

The destruction that followed wasn’t a battle. It was a systematic wiping out of the enemy. Ogi, Jinichi, the Hei, and the Kukuru unit were all taken down quickly. Not even Naoya, who survived the initial attack, was able to escape the fate that was waiting for him. Within an episode, the so-called “Big Three” families were decimated.

Within the confines of the colonies, however, the Culling Game has been just as merciless. Old-world sorcerers reborn in modern bodies and modern-day combatants alike have been falling quickly. The defeat of Dhruv Lakdawalla off-screen by Yuta Okkotsu is just one reminder of how effective Yuta has become. Tokyo No. 1 Colony’s Megumi Fushiguro’s development has come with a price.

His battles with Chizuru Hari and Reggie Star have not been easy victories; they have been draining, destructive battles that have left the battlefield and Megumi himself scarred. They have not been easy victories, but steps further into moral gray areas that seem to grow more and more dubious by the day. The series has also revisited some of the earlier splits, including the execution of Principal Masamichi Yaga and the death of Naobito Zen’in.

The overall picture is one of a jujutsu society that is splintering along traditional lines and power struggles. And for fans of the manga, there is an uncomfortable feeling that it is all just the beginning. The upcoming confrontation between Yuki Tsukumo and Kenjaku looms large, as does the fate of Ryu Ishigori and Tsumiki Fushiguro’s story arc, which promises to have emotional implications that could redefine everything. The current pace of the series suggests that the second half of Season 3 could be the darkest the series has to offer, not just in body count but in what it asks of its characters.
