The 2026 BAFTA awards showcased a wide roster of films across different genres. While it paved the way for most independent directors, the award show turned controversial. This was after John Davidson’s outburst, and here’s how Alan Cumming responded.

Alan Cumming’s online apology for the BAFTA controversy

Alan Cumming, known for his major roles in Spy Kids and Emma, hosted this year’s BAFTA. A week after the recent controversy row, he took to the internet to apologize for John Davidson’s outburst at the award show. The Instagram post stated:

What should have been an evening celebrating creativity as well as diversity and inclusion turned into a trauma-triggering s— show. I’m so sorry for all the pain Black people have felt at hearing that word echoed around the world.

In his apology, Cumming apologized to the Black and Tourette communities. This was a week after the BBC failed to edit the clip featuring Davidson’s outburst. He said:

I’m so sorry the Tourettes community has been reminded of the lack of understanding and tolerance that abounds regarding their condition.”

To give context, John Davidson is a Scottish campaigner prominently known for his activism for the Tourette’s Syndrome community. His biopic, I Swear, starring Robert Aramayo, won two BAFTA awards for Best Casting and Best Actor in a leading role, respectively.

The incident occurred when Michael B. Jordan and Delroy Lindo presented the award for Best Special Effects when Davidson shouted the n—-. Many fans, netizens, and celebrities condemned the BBC’s failure to omit the clip entirely.

Cumming’s apology was criticized by some netizens who noted that he apologized almost a week after the incident. Others, however, felt that he did not need to apologize for the debacle entirely.

In a recent turn of events, the BBC also issued an apology for not editing out the clip entirely. Their spokesperson said, “We apologize that this was not edited out prior to broadcast, and it will now be removed from the version on BBC iPlayer.

With Alan Cumming’s apology, several X users also criticized BAFTA’s failure and demanded that the award show respond and apologize for the incident.
