The Ghoul is heading into uncharted territory—and he’s going alone. Following the Season 2 finale of Fallout, co-showrunner Geneva Robertson-Dworet has announced that there will be a major change in the direction of Walton Goggins’ popular character in the upcoming Season 3 of the post-apocalyptic series. As reported by Collider, the co-showrunner has stated that while the overall plot of the series will continue to unfold around the Las Vegas area, the Ghoul will be branching off from Lucy and Max to go on his own mission in the state of Colorado.

A solo journey through the Wasteland

Lucy and Max are not headed to Colorado,” Geneva Robertson-Dworet said in the interview. The Ghoul is going to be branching off on his own mission to find his lost family, continuing the search that has taken him centuries. While the Ghoul has largely followed the same narrative as the other three characters since the series premiered in 2024, this is a rather drastic change in the direction of the popular character.

While the state of Colorado is not a major area of focus in the popular Bethesda Fallout video game series, the location has been referred to within the franchise’s lore. As such, the Ghoul’s storyline could be considered almost like a spin-off of the series—albeit one that is still considered part of the larger franchise.

However, Robertson-Dworet hinted that even making it to Colorado wouldn’t be easy. “It’s very difficult to achieve your goal in the Wasteland. So, even if you’re headed to Colorado, where are you going to have to go to first? And [the Ghoul] doesn’t know where in Colorado he’s going, so you’ve got to figure that out as well. So, he has some things to do on the journey,” she said. In addition, the Ghoul doesn’t even know where exactly in Colorado he’s headed, so his journey will include detours, risks, and perhaps new factions.

As you can imagine, considering the risks of traveling in the Fallout world, the short distance between Nevada and Colorado might be enough for a whole season of battles and conflicts.

There are also rumors of Ron Perlman reprising his role as a Super Mutant in Season 3, perhaps even connecting with the Ghoul’s story. Whether the two meet on the way to Colorado or after the Ghoul arrives, we don’t know yet. There’s no word yet on the release date of Fallout Season 3, but Seasons 1 and 2 are now live on Prime Video. One thing’s for sure: the next part of the Ghoul’s story won’t be a team effort, but a solo mission for survival.
