10 MCU villains who are simply misunderstood

10. Thanos

10. Thanos

The "villain" of the 10th slide is the ultimate example of a "Hero of the Other Side." Thanos witnessed the total collapse of his home planet, Titan, due to overpopulation and resource depletion. He didn't snap his fingers out of bloodlust; he did it out of a cold, mathematical conviction that the universe was a sinking ship. To Thanos, he was the only one with the "will" to save life by pruning it, a cosmic gardener who believed his cruelty was the only way to ensure an eternal harvest.

9. Wenwu

9. Wenwu

The leader of the Ten Rings was a man who lived for a thousand years and finally found peace through love. When that love was taken from him, he spent decades fueled by the hope of bringing his wife back. His villainy was a product of manipulation by the Dweller-in-Darkness, who preyed on a grieving husband’s desperate need for a second chance.

8. High Evolutionary (Rocket’s Perspective)

8. High Evolutionary (Rocket’s Perspective)

While objectively a monster, the High Evolutionary views himself as a divine architect. In his warped mind, he isn't committing cruelty; he is perfecting a "flawed" universe. From his perspective, the "disgusting" chaos of nature must be refined into a utopian order. He is misunderstood only in the sense that he truly believes his atrocities are a form of cosmic philanthropy.

7. Baron Zemo

7. Baron Zemo

Zemo doesn't have superpowers or an army; he has a grudge based on loss. He lost his entire family during the events of Avengers: Age of Ultron in Sokovia. To him, the Avengers are reckless vigilantes who leave a trail of "collateral damage" (human lives) in their wake. His goal wasn't to rule the world, but to prove that "super-people" shouldn't be allowed to exist without accountability.

6. Wanda Maximoff (The Scarlet Witch)

6. Wanda Maximoff (The Scarlet Witch)

Wanda’s descent into villainy in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is often criticized, but it is deeply rooted in unresolved grief. After losing her parents, her brother, her partner, and her children, she was corrupted by the Darkhold. She wasn't seeking power for the sake of it; she was a grieving mother trying to find a reality where her family still existed.

5. Gorr the God Butcher

5. Gorr the God Butcher

Gorr’s crusade began with a heartbreaking loss. After watching his daughter die of starvation despite his fervent prayers, he discovered that the gods he worshipped were arrogant, selfish, and indifferent to mortal suffering. While his plan to commit "deicide" was extreme, his anger toward divine negligence was entirely justified.

4. Namor

4. Namor

Namor is a protector, not a conqueror. Every action he takes in Black Panther: Wakanda Forever is driven by a deep-seated fear for the survival of the Talokanil. Having witnessed the horrors of colonization centuries prior, his aggression toward the surface world is a preemptive strike to ensure his people aren't enslaved or eradicated by resource-hungry nations.

3. Killmonger (Erik Stevens)

3. Killmonger (Erik Stevens)

Killmonger’s methods were radical and violent, but his underlying grievance was undeniably valid. He was a child of the African diaspora, abandoned by his royal family in a world of systemic oppression. His desire to use Wakanda's resources to liberate oppressed people globally forced T'Challa to realize that Wakanda’s isolationism was, in fact, a moral failure.

2. Vulture (Adrian Toomes)

2. Vulture (Adrian Toomes)

Adrian Toomes is the quintessential blue-collar villain. After the Battle of New York, the government and Tony Stark’s "Damage Control" swooped in and put Toomes’ salvage company out of business, threatening his family's livelihood. He turned to crime not to destroy the world, but to provide for his daughter in a system rigged against the "little guy."

1. Ghost (Ava Starr)

1. Ghost (Ava Starr)

Ava Starr wasn't interested in world domination; she was interested in staying alive. After a quantum accident killed her parents and left her in constant, agonizing physical pain, she was weaponized by S.H.I.E.L.D. Her "villainy" was a desperate race against a clock that was literal, her cells were tearing themselves apart. She didn't want to hurt the heroes; she just wanted to stop fading into nothingness.
