James Marsden will be featuring as Cyclops in the upcoming Avengers movie. It is confirmed that Avengers: Doomsday will feature characters from the X-Men, and is scheduled to hit theaters on December 18. This will mark Marsden’s first full return as Cyclops since 2006, and he shared his reaction to wearing a comic-accurate suit in a recent interview.
The Cyclops suit is “cool” but limits vision, says James Marsden
In a recent conversation with Jimmy Kimmel on his show, Jimmy Kimmel Live!, James Marsden revealed how uncomfortable it was putting on the Cyclops suit. Notably, the actor’s all-black leather Cyclops suit diverged significantly from the source material.
“First movies, we were just in black leather. Very, very tight. Very restricted. Couldn’t move around,” the actor said. He further joked that the suit restricted movement to such an extent that he had trouble jumping over walls.
“Hugh (who played Wolverine) and I, the first day of filming, we had to jump over a little retaining wall outside the Statue of Liberty, and we were both tripping over. There is a video online of us doing this,” Marsden quipped.
However, donning the new suit has given him more freedom in terms of mobility—at least until the visor is put on. “Then, to put this on, I felt very cool—I felt very proud. And then the visor goes on, and I go, ‘I can’t see again.’”
Fans recently got a glimpse of Cyclops, along with other X-Men like Professor X and Magneto, in the teaser trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. He appears in what looks like a comic-accurate blue-and-yellow costume, a clear departure from the black leather uniforms seen in the original X-Men films. The updated look also features a larger, more iconic visor, far removed from the toned-down, sleek design of the earlier versions.
Marvel’s current approach appears to lean more toward source material accuracy rather than grounding these larger-than-life characters in realism. The studio seems more committed to embracing comic-book aesthetics that highlight each character’s distinct superhero identity.
Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters on December 18, where it is expected to clash with another major franchise release, Dune 3, setting up a potentially massive box office showdown.
