Actor opens up about online hate and representation

The actor was recently interviewed and opened up about the hate he receives online since being cast to play one of the most iconic characters in the Wizarding World. Essiedu revealed that accessing social media can sometimes leave him exposed to disturbing hate that some fans send his way. Essiedu revealed that some fans had gone to the extent of sending him hate that threatened to take his life.

However, despite this hate not being acted upon, Essiedu was not shy to point out that no person should be forced to go through what he goes through because of his line of work. “Nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job,” Essiedu said in an interview.

While Essiedu receives hate from some fans online, others have come out in large numbers to support him in his role as Professor Snape.

Instead of stepping away from the situation, Essiedu seems to be embracing it. He opened up about the importance of the role, especially to younger fans who may have never seen themselves represented within the world of the Wizarding. To him, this seems to be more important than the backlash. This is what’s propelling him forward to own the role.

The argument itself seems to be similar to other big franchises that have similar discussions about staying true to the source material. This, however, seems to be part of the evolution of the series as it prepares to usher in a new generation.

Essiedu seems to be focused on bringing to life a Snape that captures the emotional complexity of the role while making it unique from the late Alan Rickman’s portrayal. With HBO’s support of him publicly, the 2027 release of the series seems to already be one of the most talked-about productions, especially due to the controversy surrounding it.
