In 2024, Universal Pictures announced that a Britney Spears biopic is in the making. It will be based on her memoir and will be directed by Jon Chu. It seems, though, that Sofia Coppola also wishes to work on a possible documentary on the Pop Princess. She spilled the beans on her approach to the film, and here’s what she had to say.
Sofia Coppola’s approach to Britney Spears’ biopic
Coppola spoke to Elle about wanting to direct a possible documentary on Spears. She gushed about the pop star and how she admired the aesthetic as well as her personality in the interview. Coppola said, “Supposedly Jon Chu is doing it, but I hope—yeah, I would love to do that story.” She also opened up about her being “kind of obsessed” with Spears, be it reading memoirs or watching her documentaries.
Spears braved through the difficulties, and there were times she clapped back at the media.“I thought it was such a punk moment,” The Godfather star was referring to one of the moments from 2007 when Spears went bald. She had a public meltdown where she attacked a Paparazzi’s car.
The singer later revealed her stages of grieving her aunt when the incident actually happened. That her going bald was her way of “pushing back,” as she revealed in her 2023 memoir ‘The Woman in Me.’ Spears’ experience and her struggles have been met with kindness and compassion. Fans have rooted for her and poured their love for her during her difficult times.
It is indeed fascinating that Coppola wishes to work on a documentary based on the Y2K pop star. She directed Priscilla, which also happens to be a biopic, based on the life of Priscilla Presley. The film follows the actress’s troubled relationship with the late Elvis Presley, her journey to stardom, and her struggles.
So far, people have praised and encouraged Coppola’s approach to the biopic. Her awareness of Spears’ struggles, history, fame, family, and her stardom proves that the movie will be treated with utmost care, like a passion project.
