Dune: Part 3 will hit the theaters this year, and it is one of the most anticipated releases. The film will mark the end of the trilogy based on Frank Herbert’s novels. Fans are excited, and so is Anya Taylor-Joy, who spoke about her character’s quirks and eccentricities.

Anya Taylor-Joy on Alia’s degree of insanity

Anya Taylor-Joy was asked about her insight regarding her character, Alia, to which she said, “The one thing that she really feels most strongly about is her love and devotion to her brother, because that is the only person who has made her feel like she makes sense.

He’s understood her from before she was even born, and she will do anything for him. It’s the various degrees of insanity.”

Alia Atreides is one of the central characters in the Dune series. She is Paul’s teenage sister, who is widely regarded and hailed as a goddess. There is an inner turmoil that is prevalent throughout the film that pertains to her need for normalcy.

As a child born with extreme wisdom and self-awareness, the pilgrims worshipped her immensely. She also faced isolation, which grew into her desire for intimacy and human connection. Anya Taylor-Joy reflected these inner conflicts and struggles brilliantly through her acting.

What also stands out about Alia’s character is her love for her brother Paul. He understands her better than most and even relates to her isolation. Her being labelled as an abomination also reflects the stigma associated with children like her.

Alia’s moral complexities make her an interesting character. This is something even Anya Taylor-Joy agreed to when she said, “Alia has a very intense blessing-curse situation. She carries the weight and the wisdom of generations and generations in her head. She’s never in a singular conversation; it’s kind of all, everything, everywhere, all at once.

Alia and Paul’s relationship as siblings is endearing yet intense due to the former’s obsession with her brother, which is also sometimes equated to devotion. To depict this range of emotions in one go is no cakewalk, and hence, Anya Taylor-Joy nailed it brilliantly.

Dune: Part 3 is set to release on 18th December 2026.
