EJAE gets emotional after Oscar win

EJAE, along with the KPop Demon Hunters songwriting crew, accepted the Best Original Song Award at the Oscars. She tearfully accepted the award, saying, “Growing up, you know, people made fun of me for liking K-pop, but now, everyone’s singing our song and all of the creative lyrics, I’m so proud, and I realize like the song, this award is not about success, it’s about resilience, and I’m just so grateful to our team.”

Kpop Demon Hunters has been sweeping the board ever since its release. The film won the Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Feature Film. The music, however, remains a major highlight nonetheless.

It has topped the charts consistently, be it Billboard or Spotify. The film also won a Grammy for the song Golden, sung by HUNTRX. But what does this win mean for EJAE exactly?

Well, EJAE started in the entertainment industry as a Kpop trainee. She struggled for almost 11 years but was dropped by SM Entertainment due to her vocal style. It did not align with the agency’s style and aesthetic. It was a major blow, but that only paved the way for her breakthrough.

She started in 2003 and left the space in 2015 without getting an avenue to debut as a Kpop star. The singer did produce singles in the meantime, but KPop Demon Hunters boosted her fame entirely.

EJAE was the singing voice of Rumi in KPop Demon Hunters, but that’s not it. She co-wrote Golden, a massive hit that won accolades this year. Along with that, she also wrote Your Idol, Prologue, and How It’s Done.

As of now, she is set to reprise her role of Rumi, specifically her singing voice. She will return in the sequel to KPop Demon Hunters, which is scheduled for release in 2029.
