The opening sequence of Scream 7 has become one of the most talked-about moments from the film. While the movie marks the return of Sidney Prescott, played by Neve Campbell, a new face has also caught viewers’ attention. Actor Michelle Randolph appears briefly in the film but still leaves an impression. Even though her character meets a violent end, Randolph says she would happily return if the story ever allowed it. Fans have already begun discussing the possibility online.
The Impact of the Ortega Comeback
Randolph portrays Madison, who goes to see the popular Macher house (a well-known house to long-time fans of the series) that has become a Ghostface-themed Airbnb with her boyfriend Scott. Initially, the visit is casual but rapidly descends into chaos. At the very beginning of the movie, Madison is right at the front of Ghostface’s line of sight when she walks through the doorway of the house.
As the chaos continues, Madison fights hard to stay alive during the attack in the house. When the attack is over, the scene ends with an unbelievable moment of a falling chandelier and a fire. Ultimately, Madison dies; this sets up the remainder of the movie. After the movie was released, Randolph stated in an interview that the positive comments from viewers on social media helped her deal with the extremely negative reactions from other viewers.
“That’s so nice. I don’t really read a lot of things online. So, thank you confidence boost for today,” Randolph said while discussing the response. “I wish she could come back to life. Is there gonna be a ‘Scream 8’? It’s like Jenna Ortega’s character when she just all of a sudden was alive…”
I find it fascinating that Randolph points to Jenna Ortega as an example of the way she would like to see her own role in the franchise unfold. Randolph was in the 2022 film Scream with Ortega, where Ortega plays Tara Carpenter. Unlike many opening victims in the franchise, Tara does survive the attack in Scream and becomes a key character in the subsequent films in the series.
This twist changes the way fans view the series. Before Tara’s survival, many viewers expected that once a victim had been introduced in the first act, they would likely disappear before the credits rolled. The new character also helps Ortega become well-known across the globe and makes her one of the most well-recognised stars of the franchise.
Randolph joked that she would love for there to be a similar twist for Madison. Randolph stated it would be humorous if Madison were to suddenly appear alive. Although Madison’s death is shown in the film, horror franchises are notorious for shocking fans’ return of characters.
Fans have already speculated on how Madison could return in Scream 8. Fans’ primary wish is that Madison returns; however, it is hoped she does so in a different capacity than what she did in Scream 7. The brief time in which Madison appears in Scream 7 is still a very powerful moment in the series. An obvious example of this is the crowd’s response to Madison’s appearance in Scream 7.
A short-lived role can make a large impact in a long-running series.
