The latest animated feature film, The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, has been making headlines even before it hits theaters. This is because the director, Lauren Montgomery, recently made it clear that she would like the feature film to hit theaters rather than be released on streaming. This has naturally generated a lot of debate among fans of the long-running Avatar: The Last Airbender universe.

The Streaming Decision Sparks Debate

This comes just a few days after the director announced that filming had officially ended. This is indeed a milestone in the feature film that has been in the making for quite some time. As is well known, the feature film was delayed many times before it was finally completed in early 2026.

There has been a lot of debate regarding the release of the feature film. It is known that in December 2025, Paramount Pictures made the surprise decision to remove the feature film from the theatrical release schedule.

For both Montgomery and fans, this has sparked concern about the film’s potential, based on the production company’s views. The film has been described by the director as “action packed and insane,” with the director going on to say that “It was an emotional time for the whole team to finish this long production.

Co-director Steve Ahn has confirmed that his part of the film was finished in February 2026, with the crew finalizing post-production in March. Paramount pulled the theatrical release in December 2025; Montgomery is now publicly demanding its return to cinemas.

The film will feature the original heroes of the series Avatar: The Last Airbender in their twenties. The original “Gaang” members include Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, and Zuko. The film takes place after the original series but before The Legend of Korra.

The movie is currently expected to arrive on Paramount+ in fall 2026, with October widely rumored as the target window.
