Modern Family had some of the most iconic cast and characters, and Mitch was one of them. Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who played the character, got his big break because of the show. The actor recently revealed why he eventually rejected the show’s spinoff.
Jesse Tyler Ferguson explains Modern Family spinoff rejection
Jesse Tyler Ferguson recently opened up about rejecting the Modern Family spinoff. During his Dinner’s on Me podcast, he revealed the reasons behind his move. He said, “Modern Family ended, and then we had a pandemic, you know. I was so excited for this next chapter of my life, and then it was like, everyone go inside.”
The episode was released on March 3 and featured Wendi McLendon-Covey as well. To give context, Ferguson and Eric Stonestreet were both actors who played Mitch and Cam. They rose to fame after playing the characters for almost a decade.
Ferguson also expressed his dismay upon being typecast in this specific role. His rejection also stemmed from the need to explore different roles in the industry, which seems all the more reasonable. He did comment on the script, albeit with plans to do a play in New York at that point in time.
His co-star Eric Stonestreet gave an interview with Graham Bensinger, where he revealed that the producers rejected the spin-off idea entirely, despite an impressive script.
Stonestreet also praised Ferguson, saying, “I love my character. I love the show. I love Jesse. We had a great working relationship, we had amazing chemistry. I think Jesse and I maybe felt like they thought of us as the old guys, or something like that, that didn’t seem worthy of keeping those characters going. It felt a little hurtful. But people make business decisions.“
Modern Family premiered in 2010 and aired until 2020. The show has 11 seasons in total and is often praised for its lighthearted comedy. It perfectly blends the family dynamics with tongue-in-cheek humor.
The show follows the lives of Jay, Gloria, Mitch, Cam, and Phil as they find themselves intertwined in an interesting familial setup.
