The modern spy genre has been personified by actor Matt Damon and his iconic Jason Bourne series for years. The series has been instrumental in changing the face of the action genre with its realistic approach and gripping spy stories. Now, the future of the series seems to be moving in a completely new direction, as Universal is planning a major change for the series.
Universal Moves Toward Bourne Reboot
Interestingly, despite all the years of speculation and anticipation for a new sequel, Matt Damon will not be reprising his role as Jason Bourne. Instead, Universal Pictures is reportedly planning for a full-on reboot of the franchise, with the role of the iconic spy character being played by someone else, with filmmaker Edward Berger still being attached to the project to direct it.
After Universal Pictures reportedly acquired the rights to the franchise again, they started working on a new take on the series, with the hope of reviving the series for a new generation of viewers. “I will do it if Matt wants to do it,” Berger told The Hollywood Reporter previously. “If we can really have the feeling that we are adding something new to the great Bourne films that were already.”
This upcoming film represents a significant milestone in the franchise, which was originally kick-started by The Bourne Identity. This film was the starting point of the audience’s introduction to the character of Jason Bourne, who was an amnesiac spy. The franchise has since become synonymous with some of the best action films of the 2000s, with The Bourne Supremacy and The Bourne Ultimatum being two of the strongest installments in the series, which solidified the franchise’s status as a defining narrative in the world of espionage thrillers.
However, the more recent films, such as The Bourne Legacy and Jason Bourne, did not quite elicit the same level of enthusiasm from the audience. Although Jason Bourne managed to rake in more than $400 million at the global box office, it was not quite the success that the audience was hoping for. Despite this, the franchise has managed to rake in more than $1.6 billion at the global box office, with five films in the franchise, which has led Universal to believe that reviving this spy franchise with a new perspective would be a good idea.
