Selena Gomez confirms unreleased Taylor Swift song inspired by their friendship

Taylor Swift’s Dorothea inspiration revealed as Selena Gomez confirms fan theory.

In a moment that instantly sent Swifties and Selenators into emotional overdrive, Selena Gomez confirmed on March 3, 2026, that Taylor Swift’s 2020 song “Dorothea” was written about her. Appearing on the Friends Keep Secrets podcast with her husband, Benny Blanco, Gomez opened up about her 17-year friendship with Swift and finally put all the fan speculation to rest.

Dorothea’s backstory unveiled

Well, ‘Dorothea’ is about me. It’s eloquently put, but it’s also just our life. It’s about the girl who left the small town and got caught up in the ‘makeup and magazines’ of it all, but still has that one person who sees through the glamour,” she told the audience, smiling as she talked about the early days of their relationship.

Fans have speculated for years that the song, which touches on the subject of selling makeup and magazines, is a nod to Selena Gomez’s Rare Beauty brand, but the song, Gomez explained, represents something much deeper—the crazy, hopeful days when she was 15 and Swift was 18, both trying to figure out fame and growing up at the same time.

The level of intimacy in their dialogue increased even more when Gomez shared information about an unreleased Swift song, “Family,” that was created more than ten years ago. Gomez explained that this unreleased Swift song described her and Swift’s dreams as teenagers, with Gomez dreaming of being a serious actress and Swift dreaming of performing in sold-out venues.

Listening to this unreleased song, Gomez said, was surreal because “those stupid dreams actually happened.” In fact, one of the lines in this unreleased Swift song, “In every crowd I see you,” still makes Gomez cry.

“It says something like, ‘You want to be in a movie, in every crowd I see you.’ And her part was about playing stadiums. Now, when I listen to it, I want to cry because both of those things actually happened for us.” Gomez explained that this makes their friendship seem untouched by time. In fact, one of the lines in this unreleased Swift song, “In every crowd I see you,” still makes Gomez cry.

Their shared milestones have continued to bring Gomez and Swift closer together. Gomez got engaged to her boyfriend, Blanco, in December 2024 before marrying him in September 2025. Swift, on the other hand, got engaged to NFL star Travis Kelce in August 2025. Gomez said that finding stability at the same time as Swift was “the coolest part” of their relationship, especially considering all the heartbreak that had filled their lives in recent years.

Considering that there are rumors that Swift and Kelce are getting married in June 2026, their timelines are once again aligning in the same way that they have always done.
