Game of Thrones officially ended in 2019 with its eighth season. The series franchise has an ongoing prequel, but there’s apparently a movie in the works. From production to screenplay, here’s everything we know about the Warner Bros. movie so far.
‘Andor’ Showrunner announces Game of Thrones movie
As reported by Variety, ‘Andor’ showrunner Beau Willimon is set to work on the Game of Thrones movie. He also co-wrote House of Cards previously and has currently drafted the script for it. He submitted the drafted script to Warner Bros., as claimed by Page Six Hollywood Reports. The cast and director aren’t confirmed as of yet, but we do know that the movie will be produced under the Warner Bros banner.
It is also speculated that the upcoming movie might focus on Aegon I. He was the founder of the Targaryen dynasty and also the Lord of the Seven Kingdoms. So far, the origins of the Targaryens aren’t explicitly explored in depth.
It will most likely be a prequel, which will shed light on the dynasties in the Game of Thrones universe, according to speculation. Aegon’s conquest and victories positioned the Targaryens as the rulers of Westeros.
There is an underlying tone of uncertainty regarding this entire project. The ongoing merger between Paramount, Skydance, and Warner Bros can potentially determine the project’s outcome.
That is to say, there is a certainty of the project being scrapped entirely if Paramount takes over, as some fans speculated of late. Die-hard fans know that Game of Thrones and Harry Potter are some of Warner Bros.’s passion projects.
From what we know so far, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will premiere in January 2026. It’s a prequel to Game of Thrones that is solely based on George R.R. Martin’s novella Tales of Dunk and Egg.
HBO also announced the spin-off series based on Arya Stark. Quoc Dang Tran is the writer rumored to be linked with the project. The director and additional cast are yet to be decided and announced. Maisie Williams might star in this prequel, but this prequel is at a very early stage of development.
