Drew Goddard issues update on The Matrix 5 movie

Matrix 5 gains momentum as Drew Goddard crafts script, honoring Wachowski legacy and Neo mythology.

It’s been nearly two years since fans of The Matrix have received any real news regarding the upcoming film, and finally, director Drew Goddard gives fans something real to grasp regarding The Matrix 5—and it’s good news and intriguing news at that. In an interview with Screen Rant while promoting his upcoming sci-fi epic Project Hail Mary starring Ryan Gosling, Goddard revealed that he’s working hard on getting the next chapter of the iconic franchise underway.

Drew Goddard confirms The Matrix 5 script progress

His statement was short and sweet, but tells fans a great deal about his intentions and plans regarding The Matrix 5, which is “still in the works. I’m in my writing cave writing. I don’t know how long I’ll be in that writing cave, but whenever I come out, I’ll have news to share.”

To fans of The Matrix franchise, the term “writing cave” is quite symbolic and tells fans a great deal about Goddard’s plans and intentions regarding the upcoming film. In fact, Warner Bros. executives revealed that Goddard’s pitch was one that would “advance the fantasy world” and honor the lore of the original film—a statement that could mean a soft reboot or a new generation of red-pilled rebels.

Of course, the first thing to note is that this will not be the first installment without the Wachowskis at the helm. Lana Wachowski is still on board as an executive producer, which does give the upcoming installment a sense of continuity to the original trilogy.

The biggest question is the casting, and this is another area where Reeves has been quite vocal in the past. He has said that he would only reprise his role as Neo if invited to do so by Lana Wachowski. With the latter on board as an executive producer, fans are cautiously optimistic that this may happen at least on a symbolic level. Of course, the same goes for Moss and Fishburne as well, although nothing has been officially confirmed at this point in time.

The question behind the scenes is the recently announced merger between Paramount and Warner Bros., which has led to the former announcing that all in-development projects are currently up for review. However, with the latter being one of the crown jewels in the Warner Bros. library, it is likely that the studio will give Goddard the green light on the installment, provided that the script is worthy of the franchise as a whole.

This question is still the waiting game that the fans have to go through, and this is something that has been true in the world of the Matrix from the very start.
