Ricky Gervais takes shot at Bad Bunny, Billie Eilish after Grammys act

After Grammys speeches spark debate, Ricky Gervais reminds celebrities of his blunt awards-show stance again.

Ricky Gervais, meanwhile, could not resist taking a swipe at one of his most discussed moments during the 2026 Grammy Awards, taking a subtle jab at this year’s ceremony and the awarding speeches that made headlines. After the show, the comedian and former Golden Globes Awards host took to social media and shared a clip from his infamous 2020 monologue, reminding celebrities everywhere not to turn their award show moments into lectures. Alongside the post, the comedian wrote, “They’re still not listening,” clearly hinting at the statements made by Bad Bunny and Billie Eilish

Ricky Gervais revives monologue to mock Grammys speeches

“If you do win an award tonight, don’t use it as a political platform to make a political speech,” Gervais reposted from advice he gave in 2020. “You’re in no position to lecture the public about anything. You know nothing about the real world. Most of you spent less time in school than Greta Thunberg.”

The clip, which immediately went viral, showed Gervais talking to a room full of celebrities during the Golden Globes Awards, reminding everyone that the speeches during the show should not turn into lectures. Although Gervais’ post did not mention any particular celebrities, the timing of the post was a jab at the tone of the Grammys, which had a number of emotionally charged moments from the celebrities who attended the show.

This is not the first time Gervais has decided to share the resurfaced video. Gervais shared the video after the 2025 Emmy Awards, only to later delete it after it began to gain traction on social media platforms. Gervais’ repeated sharing of the video has been a sort of commentary on what is expected of celebrities in modern times.

The 2026 Grammys must be considered one of the most expressive award shows in quite some time, with the artists using the time allotted to them on the stage to communicate with their audience from a deeply personal perspective. This was as much an award ceremony focused on expression as it was focused on celebration.

Gervais is known for his persona as the man with no filter, something he has never made a secret about. He has no love for the world of Hollywood. He has also made himself out to be an outsider when it comes to award shows. The reaction by Gervais towards the Grammys must be seen as an extension of his persona, not necessarily as an attack against the celebrities within the world of Hollywood, but more so as an extension of the larger trend with award shows as a whole.

As award shows continue to change with the times, the moment with Gervais and the Grammys must be seen as an extension of the tension between performance, expression, and expectation, something that Gervais has never been afraid to make fun of.
