It’s been almost two decades since The Devil Wears Prada first became a staple of pop culture, with stilettos strutting their way down the runway. 20th Century Studios has now given us a first look at The Devil Wears Prada 2, a film that promises to give us a sleek yet scathing look at how Miranda Priestly’s reign of icy control plays into a fashion world that no longer necessarily plays on those terms.
Trailer teases a modern sequel focused less on nostalgia
Coming out on May 1, 2026, The Devil Wears Prada 2 promises to see Meryl Streep once again portray the role of the razor-sharp editor-in-chief of Runway magazine, a role that this time promises to be complicated by a world that no longer necessarily plays on those terms. Print journalism is no longer necessarily a big player, with advertising money for luxury brands becoming a rare commodity. Miranda Priestly must navigate a world that no longer necessarily plays on her terms.
The conflict at the heart of this trailer centers on Emily Blunt’s role as Emily Charlton, a former assistant to Miranda Priestly turned advertising executive with a luxury conglomerate that holds the keys to the advertising money that Runway so desperately needs. Anne Hathaway also reprises her role as Andrea Sachs, who is no longer the young and ambitious assistant trying to navigate the world of fashion. She’s now a successful woman in her own right and seems to be caught between her complicated past with Miranda and the world she was a part of.
This could be a commentary on the struggle between power and the world she was a part of, and whether anyone can ever really escape Miranda Priestly’s world. The fan-favorite characters are also coming back in full force. Stanley Tucci, Tracie Thoms, Tibor Feldman, and Blunt all return to their old roles. Kenneth Branagh and Patrick Brammall join the cast as love interests for Miranda and Andrea, respectively. New cast members include Simone Ashley, Lucy Liu, B.J. Novak, Justin Theroux, Lady Gaga, and Pauline Chalamet.
This suggests that the sequel will be a much more modern take on the world of fashion and the world of media. One character who won’t be making a return, however, is Adrian Grenier’s Nate, who played the role of Andrea’s boyfriend from the original. The behind-the-scenes team also returns with the same key people. David Frankel, who directed the original, and Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote the original, are coming back with Wendy Finerman, who produced one of the original’s writers.
This suggests that the sequel will be about the characters and not just about nostalgia. The Devil Wears Prada 2, from what can be gleaned from the trailer, appears to be a film not just about designer heels and memorable one-liners. It appears to be a film about power and relevance in a world Miranda Priestly used to own. Does she still have power?
