The message that the Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, has conveyed on the issues of motherhood, identity, and the values she wants to instill in her child has been quite effective at the Sundance Film Festival.

While discussing the new documentary “Cookie Queens” that has been featured at the Sundance Film Festival, Meghan has appreciated the filmmaker Alyssa for the work she has done on the film. The film is about young girls, and Meghan has spoken about the emotional depth and individuality that Alyssa has captured through the young girls that she has featured in the film. She has said that storytelling helps the audience to understand the complexity of the young girls—their ambitions, curiosities, and strengths—instead of stereotyping them.

storytelling, female identity, and raising strong young women at Sundance

“It’s such a testament to Alyssa’s filmmaking and her editing, because you really got to see the nuance and layers of all these young girls. They’re so inspiring. You’ll see when you watch. And I think for me, from the viewpoint as a mother, I find that really inspiring to continue parenting in the way that we are, and to grow and develop and nurture our daughter to be a really strong young lady like these girls are as well.”

Meghan also talked about how much she related to what was represented on the screen, not only as a parent, but also as a woman, and how she works in different capacities. “Really, this film is such a perfect example of the spirit of Sundance and of independent filmmaking—how an entire team came together, how Alyssa’s vision came to light, but also just the spirit of community, the spirit of togetherness, and the nuance and the fun and the playfulness that we can find in the process too.” The struggle between self-definition and how one is perceived by others is something Meghan said she related to.

The movie was something Meghan related to on a different level as a mother. She talked about how it made her realize even more the importance of raising her daughter and what her goal is as a mother. Her goal is to make sure her daughter becomes a confident, strong woman who knows her own self-worth.

Meghan talked about what this project represented to her on a different level, what it represented creatively, and what it represented in terms of the spirit of collaboration. She talked about how this movie came to be, how it represented the heart of independent filmmaking, and how artists come together and support each other, finding playfulness in what they do.
