Margot Robbie has talked about the deep creative chemistry that she shared with co-star Jacob Elordi during the filming of “Wuthering Heights,” stating that she felt so much chemistry that she felt “quite lost” if she wasn’t around her co-star.
In a recent cast interview with Fandango, the nominated actress opened up about her working methods and her emotional connection with her cast members. Robbie, aged 35, is set to star alongside Elordi, aged 28, in director Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Emily Brontë’s literary classic, as she portrays the passionate lovers, Catherine Earnshaw and Heathcliff.
“Like a kid without his blanket”
She gave the example of being in such a situation that she was ‘so codependent’ with the people working with her, saying that this is usually the type of situation that develops quickly. “I’m always that person who’s so devastated when a job’s over, and I never want it to end,” she explained. “I think I developed that quite quickly with Jacob, too.“
The fact that they shared such close proximity, according to the actress, started almost immediately on the set. “He would just be always in the vicinity where I was, but like in a corner, watching Cathy,” Robbie said, describing how Elordi was just like the character in the way that he was observing her.
Director Emerald Fennell, 40, was quick to correct the idea that Elordi’s acting in the scene was a director’s note. “I didn’t tell him to do that,” she laughed. “I actually had to ask him to leave.”
However, by the third day of shooting, this dynamic gradually began to shift. Robbie has admitted that she began to subconsciously look for Elordi even when he was not there. “I was really unnerved and unmoored, and I felt quite lost, like a kid without their blanket or something.”
Elordi agreed with the assessment when he said, “mutual obsession.” “If you have the opportunity to share a film set with Margot Robbie, you’re going to make sure you’re within five to ten meters at all times,” because “watching how she drinks tea, how she eats her food. … She’s just like an elite actor,” he said.
Wuthering Heights is one of the major supporting roles for both of them. The film will be produced by Robbie’s production company, LuckyChap Entertainment, which produced the movies ‘Barbie’ and ‘Saltburn.’ It also stars Shazad Latif, Hong Chau, Alison Oliver, Charlotte Mellington, and Owen Cooper. Robbie will be producing the film with her husband, Tom Ackerley, with whom she gave birth to their baby boy in October 2024.
The cast had already discussed how immersive their series was to film, having been done on location in the English countryside. Elordi recalled playing Kate Bush’s popular track ‘Wuthering Heights’ in the Moors to set the mood. “Watching the sunset on the Moors as the spirit of these characters have for the last 200 years—it felt like we were catching little pieces of that unrequited love,” Elordi recalled.
It should be pointed out that the approach to the film by Emerald Fennell has already been observed to be characterized by the drastic tone and unconventional approach to the presentation of the film through the style adopted for the marketing of the film, which centers on the psychological instability of the film.
Wuthering Heights is scheduled to be released in cinemas on February 13, which means that this movie is one of the most anticipated book-to-movie translations at the beginning of 2026 because of its intense acting, as well as the chemistry between its lead actors.
