HBO has had huge success with its Game of Thrones series prequel, House of the Dragon, and is nearing completion. It was recently confirmed by show writer Ryan Condal on the Escape Hatch podcast late in December 2025 that House of the Dragon would indeed finish after its fourth season, bringing long-awaited closure to fans and members of the press who had been speculating about it for so long. As he expressed on the podcast, Condal is currently working on scripting for their fourth installment.
“Now, also knowing there’s only, you know, one more left to go and feeling like we can leave it all out on the field…” as they have already started the writing process of the upcoming 4th season, which is said to be the last one as well, “So yeah, it’s all trending up in a good way.”
This is in response to the long-standing question regarding what the future of the series will look like. Though insiders and fans of the show were long aware that season 4 would mark the end of the series, there was no official word from Casey Bloys, the current CEO of HBO, who stated to Deadline that, “For all of our shows, we generally try to leave it to the creators to make that decision. We’ll work with them. Sometimes, people will work through the season to feel like, ‘Does it feel like a natural end? Does it not?’ So I don’t have updates for you on any of that. But when we do, I’ll let you know.” Season 4’s renewal, however, puts the story’s progression in perspective and provides an endpoint for fans of the Targaryen series.
Post-production for season 3 and plans for season 4
In the meantime, the production schedule for House of the Dragon Season 3 was completed in October 2025, and the series has now commenced post-production. Condal teased on the podcast that they were totally immersed in realizing the vision for “these goddamn dragons.” While there is no official date for its release, Season 3 is expected to drop in summer 2026, following the journey of Rhaenyra Targaryen (played by Emma D’Arcy) as she fights for the Iron Throne.
After the completion of season 3, pre-production on the final season will begin. This will mark the beginning of the fourth and final season. Although the production side is not confirmed yet, one thing is sure—the writers will have a clear direction on how to conclude the Targaryen civil war called the Dance of the Dragons.
House of the Dragon has an established story direction, as it is now revealed that season 4 will be the last season of the entire series. Now, viewers will be eager for the well-structured finale that will cover storylines and plot twists as well as dragon-filled fights. The coming seasons will bring more updates related to the show’s schedule and release timings. The House of the Dragon season 3 will be out in summer 2026, and season 4 will be out later, concluding the saga of Westeros’ most scandalous family.
