German actor Lars Eidinger has recently shared his thoughts about ‘Man of Tomorrow‘ after visiting its set. When watching rehearsals of the upcoming DC film directed by James Gunn, Eidinger noticed a Superman actor suspended from wires in front of the blue screen. However, rather than comparing the image to yet another example of movie special effects, the famous stage actor made a unique comparison involving one of the best-known images in theater history: Hamlet holding Yorick’s skull.
What makes the comparison so notable is that the man making it is primarily associated with classical theater rather than big-screen productions. Throughout his career, Eidinger managed to establish himself as a prominent actor in stage productions in Europe. In addition, his performance of Shakespeare’s ‘Hamlet’ in the Schaubühne theater in Berlin became the most popular and acclaimed of recent years, thus making the actor’s thoughts about the superhero film even more interesting.
For Lars Eidinger, Superman on Wires Signified the Essence of Fiction
For Eidinger, the image meant something much bigger than movie special effects. Seeing a performer flying around in front of a digital landscape made him think about the power of illusion employed in theater to tell incredible stories. For the actor, the use of such techniques as wires and blue screen does not limit the imagination of people but helps to convince them that fiction can be real.
“Last week I was on set during rehearsals and asked if I could watch some of the filming, which had already started. And I saw an actor in the Superman costume, suspended on wires in front of a bluescreen. I looked at that image and thought, this is the essence of fiction. It’s as significant an image as Hamlet holding the skull: Superman, in that Superman pose, hanging from wires in front of a blue screen.”
Moreover, the actor made the comparison particularly notable due to his experience with ‘Hamlet.’ Over the last decade, Lars Eidinger has been playing the eponymous role in sold-out performances at the Schaubühne theater in Berlin. Known for his physical acting style, the actor helped turn comic-book films into an art form on par with theater performances.
According to the latest report, Lars Eidinger was cast in the role of Brainiac in December 2025 as the outcome of a worldwide casting process initiated by Gunn. Being one of Superman’s oldest opponents in the comics, Brainiac is an extremely intelligent alien android whose mission involves collecting information throughout the universe.
As reported by Eidinger, Gunn allowed the actor considerable freedom while preparing for the role and helped develop Brainiac’s image and physique. In addition, Eidinger noted that the role required intensive physical preparation consisting of four training sessions per week.
Currently filming at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, ‘Man of Tomorrow’ goes by the code name Exodus. The film tells the story of Superman, played by David Corenswet, and Lex Luthor, played by Nicholas Hoult, as they join forces to fight against Brainiac. Also starring in the upcoming sequel are Rachel Brosnahan, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Aaron Pierre, and Sinqua Walls.
