Marvel Studios is gearing up for a one-hour presentation of The Punisher: One Last Kill, featuring the titular character before he appears on Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Interestingly, pictures leaked from the set last year, along with other hints, suggest that Judith Light is playing the evil Ma Gnucci. While the actress didn’t confirm her part, she did tease a “revenge” arc, which further adds to the speculation.
Judith Light expects the storyline to catch viewers off guard
Directed and co-written by Reinaldo Marcus Green, this presentation marks the second appearance of Punisher after the 2017 Netflix series, which ran for two seasons. While speaking on The Today Show, Judith Light weighed in on the project and praised Jon Bernthal, who has written it along with Green. He’s also portraying the lead role of Frank Castle/Punisher.
“Jon Bernthal wrote this with Reinaldo Marcus Green, who directed King Richard, and we did this in 12 days,” she said. “The crew was amazing. Jon is extraordinary. We were able to go deep really fast…I think people will be surprised. I think they will really appreciate it. This is really about transformation and what it means to be a person who holds on to revenge. It’s really special.”
Meanwhile, The Punisher: One Last Kill will show the events post the fallout from the Netflix show’s second season. The storyline will focus on the timeline between Daredevil: Born Again and Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Reports suggest the movie will feature Ma Gnucci, who’s a figure from Punisher/Frank’s past.
In the Welcome Back, Frank comic arc, Isabella Carmela Magdalena “Ma” Gnucci vows to take the superhero out after he killed three of her sons. Leveraging her ties with people in the NYPD, she launched a Punisher Task Force and hired a formidable Russian to end Castle’s life. The aftermath sees Punisher throwing Gnucci into a polar bear enclosure in the Central Park Zoo.
He later disposes of her limbless body in a burning building, sealing her fate for good. Considered a classic storyline by fans, it helped and inspired Bernthal while writing for this project. The Punisher: One Last Kill will hit Disney+ on May 12. Are you excited to catch Punisher coming face-to-face with one of the most iconic antagonists?
