HBO Max sent shockwaves through the comedy space last year by announcing a collaboration between Larry David and Barack Obama. Fast forward to now; the company has finally released the official trailer of Life, Larry, and the Pursuit of Unhappiness. The seven-episode series will feature a cameo appearance by the former American president, who’s also serving as the show’s producer, along with his wife. Curious? Dive in to catch the full scoop.
Obama and David team up for a comedic look at American history
The show’s latest trailer features a hilarious exchange between the two legends. “I have sat across the table from some of the world’s most intractable leaders and wrestled with some of the globe’s most intractable problems,” Obama says at the beginning, breaking the fourth wall. “Nothing has prepared me for working with Larry David.”
The politician even joked that he remained just a producer, so he didn’t have to deal with David because “it’s a lot.” And that’s when the 78-year-old comedian cut Obama off abruptly, asking him to become his emergency contact. After he refuses to accommodate his request, Larry says, “Ah, I’ll ask Michelle [Obama],” to which the ex-Prez replies, “Good luck with that.”
The comedy series will feature sketches inspired by various moments in American history. The series will have seven episodes, with each covering four sketches. The show’s official logline reads, “President and Mrs. Obama wanted to honor America’s 250th anniversary and celebrate the unique history of our nation on this special occasion… But then Larry David called.”
Meanwhile, the show also stars Curb Your Enthusiasm actors Jeff Garlin, J.B. Smoove, Vince Vaughn, and Susie Essman. Beyond his role as a producer under the Higher Ground banner, Barack Obama will make a guest appearance in a single episode of the series. According to the latest reports, Bill Hader and Kathryn Hahn will take on the roles of Abraham Lincoln and Mary Todd Lincoln, respectively.
Hader is popular for playing multiple characters on Saturday Night Live. Meanwhile, Jon Hamm and Sean Hayes will play the Wright brothers, with Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld as Lewis and Clark. The show will premiere on HBO Max on June 26 at 9 pm ET. Are you pumped for Larry and Obama’s joint project? Drop your comments.
