Netflix confirms Ghostbusters animated series

Dan Aykroyd is joining Netflix’s upcoming Ghostbusters animated series, as the supernatural franchise sets to expand in 2027.

The iconic paranormal franchise Ghostbusters is set to receive a new animated series expansion, helmed by Netflix. The streaming giant has officially confirmed that Dan Aykroyd is boarding the upcoming project as an executive producer. The announcement came as part of Netflix’s major Annecy International Animation Film Festival lineup reveal. Check the details below.

Upcoming Ghostbusters animated series set to release in 2027

The upcoming untitled animated series should pique your interest, as Aykroyd is one of the creators and stars of the original Ghostbusters franchise. He co-created the original 1984 film alongside the late Harold Ramis and played the iconic Dr. Ray Stantz in the movies. Aykroyd’s previous ties to the classic two-film franchise add additional legitimacy to the upcoming animated project.

The show is being developed for Netflix in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation and Ghost Corps. The streamer hasn’t revealed much about the animated series except that it is expected to be released sometime in 2027. Netflix originally announced the project back in 2022 and has only recently provided crucial details about the upcoming show.

One of the major creative figures attached to the series is Elliott Kalan, who will serve as the writer, showrunner, and executive producer. Kalan is known for his work on The Daily Show and Mystery Science Theater 3000. His involvement could mean that the rebooted animated IP may include satirical elements to enhance its supernatural-adventure core. The show is currently in production. Kalan, along with fellow showrunner Ben Hibon, is set to unveil a first look at the series at the 2026 Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

“Executive producers Jason Reitman, Gil Kenan, and showrunners/executive producers Ben Hibon and Elliott Kalan will unveil a world exclusive preview of next year’s Ghostbusters series produced in partnership with Sony Pictures Animation,” the statement released by Netflix read. Interestingly, this won’t be the first animated series in the Ghostbusters franchise, as The Real Ghostbusters ran from 1986 to 1991, based on the 1984 film.

It featured the adventures of Venkman, Stantz, Spengler, Zeddemore, Janine, and Slimer. The animated show became a huge part of the franchise’s pop culture and helped expand it beyond the films. It was later followed by Extreme Ghostbusters, which aired in 1997 and served as a spinoff featuring a younger team of Ghostbusters. Are you excited for the upcoming animated Ghostbusters series?
