With Oscar-nominee Sebastian Stan and Ana de Armas teaming up for a gritty new project, the Cannes Film Market is officially losing its mind. There have been reports of multiple studios fighting over the hot new package titled Impunity. And now, it’s confirmed that the two stars will lead a legal espionage thriller set against the backdrop of one of the 20th century’s wildest legal cases. Read on to know the full tea.
Sebastian Stan and Ana de Armas take on Pinochet
During this morning’s massive Cannes reveal, Variety shared a sizzling scoop on the upcoming film from Chilean director Felipe Gálvez. The story follows the real-life 1998 arrest of former dictator Augusto Pinochet in London, marking the first time a former leader faced justice outside his own country.
While the film is a spy thriller, it’s also described as a “labyrinth of conspiracies” that happens behind closed doors.
“Impunity-wise, it’s using the language of the spy genre to reveal how justice is actually negotiated,” insiders noted. “Sebastian Stan is set to play a mercenary recruited by an NGO, while Ana de Armas plays a Chilean envoy caught in the middle.”
While the actors haven’t explicitly started filming yet, the project is already being called a “vital cinematic intervention” for its focus on historical accountability. The film is being shot in Chile, Spain, and the UK, and will feature both English and Spanish dialogue.
Since both Stan and de Armas are also serving as executive producers, they are clearly putting their full weight behind the historical drama. The script comes from Mariano Llinás, the same mind behind the Oscar-nominated Argentina, 1985, so you know the political tension is going to be through the roof.
The movie is eyeing a major release after Pathé snatched up international distribution rights. Since de Armas and Stan have both worked on massive blockbusters, seeing them pivot to an auteur-driven thriller like this is a total power move.
But guess what? Right after the announcement, many X users started joking that the two are basically becoming the new “king and queen of the spy genre” after their recent action hits.
Created and based on the book 38 Londres Street by Philippe Sands, the film is already being hyped as a potential award season darling. Meanwhile, one user pointed out an interesting point about the casting. “Ana de Armas in a real movie again! We’re so back,” they wrote. “Pairing her with Sebastian Stan for a political thriller is just perfection.”
With information still trickling out of Cannes, the guessing game on who else will join the cast continues. Who do you think will be cast to play the former dictator himself?
