Invincible creator Robert Kirkman has revealed that J.K. Simmons was actually first offered a completely different role in the animated series before he became Omni-Man. In an interview on The Escape Pod Podcast, Robert explained that they initially wanted to cast J.K. Simmons as Cecil Stedman, a top leader of the Global Defense Agency.
J.K. Simmons demanded to become Invincible’s villain Omni-Man instead
Kirkman revealed that even though his team saw Simmons as a great choice for the role of Cecil Stedman, the actor quickly rejected the offer after reading the script. “I think we initially thought he’d be kind of interesting to play Cecil, and then when he read the script, he just went, like I really don’t want to do this; I’m going to do Omni-Man,” Kirkman said in the interview.
As a result, they cast J.K. Simmons as Nolan Grayson and cast Walton Goggins to voice Cecil Stedman—a character the audience now considers perfect for the role due to his reserved and controlled tone. This decision changed everything about Invincible
Kirkman further explains that J.K. Simmons’s acting has become absolutely crucial for the success of the series. “It’s almost impossible to picture anybody other than J.K. Simmons voicing this character. Because it brings such gravitas. And at the same time, it has such a range of emotions,” Kirkman said.
The actor’s work was essential to developing the whole storyline of the series and the protagonist’s relationship with his Viltrumite heritage. At the same time, Simmons brought some personal touch to the role—he admits he didn’t know much about Invincible at first, but felt an instant connection because of his kids being about the same age as his own.
Also, it allowed the actor to create Omni-Man himself by helping Kirkman to develop the main idea of the character’s personality as a complex mix of two beings rather than just an unemotional villain.
Discussing the possibility of a live-action Invincible movie, Kirkman has noted that while J.K. Simmons is the definitive voice of Omni-Man, he isn’t opposed to different casting for a physical performance. Kirkman has jokingly mentioned that a younger Ed O’Neill, specifically during his Married… with Children era, captured the “look” and “vibe” of Nolan Grayson perfectly. However, Kirkman remains committed to the current animated cast, emphasizing that Walton Goggins as Cecil Stedman and Michael Dorn as Battle Beast are irreplaceable in their respective roles for the show’s future.
