Everyone is all revved up for the Met Gala happening this year. The costumes, the looks, and the concept itself are simply offbeat. There is but one person whose say matters the most, and it is Anna Wintour. But what makes her involvement in the whole event so important and unique? Well, let’s find out!

Anna Wintour’s role in the Met Gala, explained

The Met Gala is usually held to fund the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It is a charity event, and each year, the guests are told to follow the concept and theme of the event.

Anna Wintour is in charge of the Met Gala and has been since the 1990s. She has reshaped the fashion industry through her collaborations and her editorial brilliance. She started off working as an editorial assistant at Harper & Queen and then subsequently joined Vogue in 1988. It was then, in 1995, that she was made the chair of the Costume Institute Gala.

Wintour is also a trustee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and with her position as a global chief content officer and artistic director at Condé Nast, it solidifies her influence as an icon. Her status as a global editor for Vogue cannot be refuted in any case, but that’s not it. Wintour took the Met Gala event to new heights ever since she took over her position as the chair.

It is she who has the say when it comes to the guest list, themes, and concepts. For those who may know, each year, the Met Gala follows a theme.

Last year, it was Black Dandyism, where celebs sported costumes with tailored suits, elaborate hats, and blouses with cravats and, most importantly, ruffs.

From Lady Gaga’s meat dress to Kim Kardashian’s Mugler latex drop dress, the looks at the Met Gala are phenomenal and display creative brilliance, and this is something Wintour pushes forward as a creative force.

Being an editorial chief for both Vogue and Condé Nast and a patron for craftsmanship, Anna Wintour carefully selects the guests and curates the themes based on which designers craft out their masterpieces.

As many media houses reported, Wintour has successfully managed to gather approximately $223 for the Metropolitan Museum. She is also speculated to have been paid 2 million each year for her role in the event.
