HBO‘s smash-hit series Euphoria is currently airing its third season. According to the show’s creator and cast, Season 4 doesn’t seem to be on the horizon. However, a recent HBO listing has added another twist to the tale.
HBO listings label Season 3 final episode as “season finale”
Recent HBO listings and promotional materials have labeled the final episode of Season 3, which is set to air on May 31, 2026, as a “season finale.” Typically, shows that are definitely ending are labeled as a “series finale.” Notably, the network has previously listed episodes as a “series finale” for shows that have been confirmed to come to an end.
Fans quickly noticed the “season finale” label and took it as a possible hint of continuation. Despite the speculation, everything still points toward Season 3 being the end. Zendaya was recently on The Drew Barrymore Show and said that “closure is coming” when asked whether Season 3 would be the final season for the show. On the other hand, Euphoria creator Sam Levinson has stated that he has no concrete plans for Season 4, as he writes every season as if it’s the last.
The biggest hurdle for a fourth season is the meteoric rise of the core cast. Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney, and Jacob Elordi are now global film stars with massive franchises, making it very hard for creators to schedule the production. Even the third season happened after a nearly four-year hiatus, following the Season 2 finale in early 2022. Furthermore, the major cast members are not teenagers anymore, so if a fourth season happens, it may need to focus on a fresh ensemble of younger characters back in East Highland.
HBO was criticized a lot for writing and production delays, and if Levinson moves into an executive producer role and hands the showrunning duties to somebody else, it could improve the efficiency of production, with HBO finding the prospect of greenlighting the fourth season favorable.
Season 3 has been a massive hit, with viewership reportedly up compared to Season 2, and if the numbers remain that high, the financial incentives to greenlight another season would be hard to ignore.
Following the five-year time jump, Season 3 sees Rue working as an Uber driver and getting pulled into d—- running activities for a strip club magnate named Alamo, while struggling under a massive debt to Laurie. Meanwhile, the group has splintered, with Nate and Cassie’s chaotic wedding ending with Nate being brutally beaten by loan sharks, and Jules engaging in high-end s– work to support her art school ambitions. As of the most recent episode, Rue and Jules have reunited under tense circumstances, while the threat of international cartels looms.
