The Walt Disney Company had explored plans to expand on the 2010 megahit animated film Tangled. However, there is disappointing news for fans of the animated fairy tale: the sequel did not move forward. In a recent interview, the film’s director, Nathan Greno, stated that the original story arc had a perfect ending, leaving little reason to pursue another sequel.

Tangled team “couldn’t find a story worth telling” for a sequel

In an interview with The Direct, Nathan Greno revealed that the creative team met to discuss ideas for a sequel but couldn’t craft a strong enough story for the studio to greenlight. As per the director’s remarks, Rapunzel’s story was already complete.

Drawing parallels with the classic tale of Pinocchio, he said, “I’m not against sequels. There was, I will say, after we finished Tangled…It’s a tricky place, because I’ll put it this way: once Pinocchio becomes a real boy, what else is there to say? Once the Beast becomes a human, what else is there to say?”

“We actually did an off-site at Disney, and we got the original team together, and we really all talked about it for hours, and we kind of walked away saying, ‘We couldn’t find a story worth telling,’” he further stated. So, instead of a theatrical sequel, Disney expanded the story with the short film Tangled Ever After, which explored Rapunzel and Eugene’s wedding day.

In 2017, the company also released the series Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure. It takes place between the film and the wedding short and follows Rapunzel’s life beyond Corona. “And so, while I love those characters…there was a short that we did—the wedding—because people come and ask, like, ‘Where’s the wedding?’ So we did do the wedding, because that felt natural. But in general, yeah, there just wasn’t a story that I could find,” Greno added.

Currently, a live-action adaptation of Tangled is in the works. The project will feature Teagan Croft as Rapunzel, Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider, and Kathryn Hahn as Mother Gothel. Hahn is reportedly replacing Scarlett Johansson, who exited due to scheduling conflicts with other major film projects. Would you have liked a sequel to Tangled?
