Antoine Fuqua’s biopic Michael is going places, and it clearly proves one thing. The sky is the limit, and that’s just one of many feathers in the cap for the director. That’s because Lionsgate has officially greenlit a sequel for the movie, and here’s everything we know so far!
Lionsgate approves Michael sequel following record debut
Lionsgate boss Adam Fogelson hinted at the possibility of a sequel following Michael’s huge box office success. He revealed the possible plot in an interview with Business Insider, saying:
“Look, there’s at least one more movie. Just speaking less as an employee of Lionsgate and more as a person who has spent a lot of time in the movie business, I was always excited by the possibility that you could make a more complete and satisfying telling of Michael’s story if you weren’t confined to only one movie.”
This comes after the film’s record-breaking success at the box office, where it made a global opening of $217.4 million, despite receiving a poor score on Rotten Tomatoes.
While critics gave the movie a low rating, fans made sure to show up and pour out their love for the late pop star. The movie might be a hollow tribute, as some say, but it rendered a sense of nostalgia among hardcore MJ fans.
There were several criticisms of Michael failing to encompass and even reflect the accusations that the late pop star faced. The truth is, Variety recently spoke about several scenes that didn’t make it to the film.
It included Michael’s Neverland residence being thoroughly searched, which obviously did not appear in the movie. This is also something that is criticized by Paris Jackson, where she called the movie a sugarcoated portrayal.
We do not know if the sequel will explore MJ’s later stages, media scandals, or the allegations of abuse anytime soon. There are, however, reports of the sequel fleshing out these aspects.
Legal issues are one of the reasons why the directors may have decided not to showcase controversy, as some suggest, but otherwise, the movie had many fans and viewers floored for the most part.
Michael is available for streaming in theaters near you!
