With the crime genre’s favorite detective finally trading his badge for a badge… of a different kind, fans are losing it over Netflix’s latest power move. There have been reports of major casting shakeups for the streaming giant’s top action thrillers. And now, Netflix has confirmed that Bosch star Titus Welliver is officially joining the fourth season of The Night Agent.
Welliver swaps LAPD for the DOJ
During this week’s massive casting update, Netflix announced that Welliver is jumping into the conspiracy-heavy world of Peter Sutherland.
While the actor is still keeping busy with the Bosch universe over at Amazon, he’s found time to take on a series regular role as “Duval,” a special prosecutor for the Department of Justice.
While we don’t know if he’s a friend or a foe yet, his history of playing tough-as-nails investigators makes him the perfect addition to the show.
“The Night Agent-wise, they are really leaning into the political thriller aspect for the next chapter,” insiders shared. “Welliver’s character, Duval, is set to be a launchpad for the Season 4 storyline, dealing with legal fallout from Peter’s international missions.”
While specific plot details are under lock and key, the casting of a heavy hitter like Welliver suggests the stakes in D.C. are about to get a lot more complicated.
The character joins a revamped roster that looks more like a movie cast than a TV show. Along with Welliver, we’re getting Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight) as Peter’s new partner, Dom, and Elizabeth Lail (You) as Peter’s ex-fiancée, Zoe.
Since the show already lost some major characters in the explosive Season 3 finale, these new faces are clearly meant to ground Peter as he tries to balance his lethal job with a personal life.
The fourth season is expected to drop in early 2027, with filming reportedly kicking off in Los Angeles this May. Since the series has been framed as Netflix’s answer to Reacher, bringing in the man who is Harry Bosch is a total flex.
But guess what? Right after the announcement, many X users joked that this is the closest we’ll ever get to a Bosch vs. Night Agent crossover event.
Created and showrun by Shawn Ryan, the series is moving production to California to lean into that gritty, West Coast noir vibe Welliver excels at. Meanwhile, one user pointed out an interesting point about the casting logic.
“Netflix is just collecting every dad-core action star like Infinity Stones,” they wrote. “First they get the Reacher audience, now they’re coming for the Bosch fans.”
With Peter Sutherland officially getting a new DOJ shadow, the guessing game on who Duval is actually working for begins.
