Phil Lord and Christopher Miller’s movie Project Hail Mary swept the floor in its first release. The movie did exceptionally well at the box office and received praise and excellent reviews from both fans and critics, but that’s not the end of it all. James Ortiz has now bagged an Oscar nomination, and here’s everything we know about it so far!
Rocky Puppeteer James Ortiz bags an Oscar nomination
James Ortiz, the puppet designer for Project Hail Mary, is eligible for the nomination of Best Actor in a Supporting Role for the 2027 Oscars, as reported by Variety.
He is a seasoned puppeteer, puppet designer, and actor as well as a director who has worked in Opera spaces. Ortiz’s notable work is the 2012 stage play The Woodsman.
For the play, he wrote the entire script and designed the puppet for the production. It takes inspiration from L. Frank Baum’s book, The Tin Woodman of Oz. He has also designed puppets for the famed Metropolitan Opera, but there’s more.
Ortiz has had an illustrious career in both Opera and Theater. He lived up to his brilliance as a puppet designer, craftsman, and an established theater actor through his performance in Project Hail Mary.
He voiced the role of Rocky, an alien whom Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, befriends when he is stranded in space. The highlight of the entire film is Grace’s relationship and dynamic with Rocky.
What this nomination does is highlight and pedestalize the importance of puppeteers and many such artists whose work doesn’t get enough acknowledgement.
We are well aware of puppetry and its significance in theater, but to magnify its presence in films is one way to visualize the artistry that goes into the entire process.
Besides that, the filmmaking in itself challenges the concept and even horizons of how a film should be made. While there are prosthetic teams and art design staff who make a film’s success possible, they deserve a due mention of their own.
Ortiz’s nomination is a win for all the artists who are involved in the immaculate process of a craft so delicate yet intricate that it often goes underappreciated by many.
