Kevin Feige, whose work on the Infinity Saga and The Multiverse Saga who has defined the modern era of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, clearly has no interest in repeating the character lineups of the past. According to recent reports from industry insiders, the highly anticipated X-Men reboot is heading in a direction that excludes the team’s most famous member, and starting this new era without Logan would not feel right to those expecting a familiar roster.
Marvel Studios reportedly leaves Wolverine out of initial X-Men reboot lineup
Speaking on the heels of the Avengers: Doomsday trailer reveal at CinemaCon 2026, reports emerged on April 20 indicating that the MCU’s fresh take on the mutants will focus on a much smaller, core group.
The plan is for the franchise to follow a coming-of-age story centered on the original five X-Men: Cyclops, Marvel Girl, Angel, Beast, and Iceman.
“The idea is for the X-Men cast to grow over several years,” a source close to the production explained. They added that while the core team might include a few additional members, the current plan notably excludes Logan. “They are not including Logan in this lineup.”
For Feige and the creative team, the reboot is inseparable from the desire to differentiate this new era from the decades of Fox-produced films.
They have repeatedly said they have no interest in a lineup as massive as X-Men ’97 right out of the gate. In their view, any version of the team that relied on Wolverine as the central protagonist once again would simply fall short of the “fresh start” the studio is aiming for.
The news has become especially outspoken among fans who were hoping to see Hugh Jackman’s veteran Logan mentor the younger mutants.
While Jackman is expected to appear in Avengers: Secret Wars in 2027, his future in the main MCU timeline remains uncertain.
Recently, insiders addressed the “elephant in the room” regarding the character’s status. Despite the massive success of Deadpool & Wolverine, they said they truly believe that too many modern franchises ruin their long-term potential by not allowing other characters to step into the spotlight.
“It definitely helps to pinpoint and know exactly what you want to do with the original five first,” the report noted.
Instead, the studio believes that introducing the X-Men as a tight-knit school group remains the perfect way to build a decade-long narrative.
While the big screen remains Logan-free for now, fans will still see the character in the X–Men ’97 second season and the Marvel’s Wolverine video game, which is set to launch on September 15, 2026, featuring Liam McIntyre as the voice of the titular hero.
Although the X-Men film doesn’t have an official release date yet, the creators have continued expanding the mutant presence in other ways.
They see the inclusion of Gambit and other veteran mutants in the upcoming Avengers epics as a companion to the reboot rather than a replacement for it.
Marvel is also reportedly working on a new retrospective project regarding the X-Men’s cinematic history, which is expected to be released in 2027 and look back at the making and legacy of the original franchise while the MCU prepares for its own version.
