Kevin Feige, whose work on the Infinity Saga and The Multiverse Saga has redefined modern movies, has once again made it clear that he has no interest in letting the momentum of the MCU stall. According to reports from CinemaCon 2026, the studio is tightening the gap between its biggest events, and making fans wait years for the conclusion to the Doctor Doom story would not feel right.
Marvel Studios sets a one-year gap
Speaking during Disney’s presentation at CinemaCon on April 16, Feige was joined by Robert Downey Jr. and the Russo Brothers to showcase the first trailer for Avengers: Doomsday.
He confirmed that the film is locked for a December 18, 2026 release, with its direct sequel, Avengers: Secret Wars, arriving exactly one year later on December 17, 2027.
“I know you’re all wondering how we’re going to follow up on the return of Robert Downey Jr.,” Feige said to the Las Vegas crowd.
He added that the production on both films is being handled as a massive, singular story arc. “Please know that we’re taking the time to coordinate this as one cohesive event. It is a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”
For Feige, the story is inseparable from the high stakes of the Multiverse. He has repeatedly said he has no interest in a slow rollout when the narrative demands urgency.
The Doomsday trailer featured a meeting between the Fantastic Four and the Avengers, as well as a warning from Chris Hemsworth’s Thor about a threat that requires a miracle. In his view, any version of this saga that didn’t hit with a rapid-fire conclusion would simply fall short.
The studio has also become more outspoken about the scale of the cast, confirming returns for Chris Evans as a long-haired Steve Rogers and various X-Men characters.
Recently, Feige addressed the “elephant in the room” regarding the six-month delay that moved the films to their current December slots.
Despite the shift, he said he truly believes that too many modern franchises ruin their potential by rushing into summer windows when a strategic move to the holiday season can create a bigger cultural moment.
“That film is coming on December 18,” Feige said. “And when the time is right, we’ll have even more to share at Hall H this summer.”
Instead, the studio believes that having Spider-Man: Brand New Day as the only major theatrical bridge in July 2026 remains the perfect way to keep audiences locked into the story.
Although Secret Wars is still in pre-production, the creators have continued expanding the narrative in other ways. They see the upcoming Endgame theatrical re-release in September, which debuts the new “Infinity: Vision” format, as a companion to the Doomsday hype rather than a separate event.
Marvel is also reportedly working on a new retrospective project about the franchise’s 20-year history, expected to be released in 2028 and to look back at the making and legacy of the MCU after the Multiverse Saga concludes.
