Fans undoubtedly loved Oscar Isaac as Resistance pilot Poe Dameron in the three Star Wars theatrical installments. Yet, the meme community didn’t spare him for his notorious dialogue, “Somehow, Palpatine returned,” from Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. It screamed lazy writing because how will you justify not giving enough context to the return of one of the franchise’s most intimidating villains? Recalling his experience, Isaac revealed it was all part of last-minute reshoots that left him “exasperated.”

Oscar Isaac voices his frustration with Star Wars Episode 9 re-shoots

On Sunday, Oscar Isaac appeared on the Happy Sad Confused podcast to promote the second season of Beef. As the conversation turned to his other projects, the actor shared an inside scoop that served as a long-overdue explanation for frustrated Star Wars fans. He revealed that his three-word dialogue in Episode 9 was not part of the original script.

Yeah, those were re-shoots. We had to do re-shoots,” he said. “Because when I look at [it], I’m like, ‘The wig’s pretty good.’ I cut my hair already and had come inThose are like those surgical strikes where you like come in, and they’re like scrambling trying to get everything going. That was like a new addition right at the end.

Isaac had no choice but to wear the wig because the scenes he referred to were shot after the movie wrapped its production. “So there was a lot of movement and flux throughout that whole thing,” he explained. “But had you asked me if, at that moment, I thought that was going to be the one [the scene that made the final cut], I wouldn’t have known…I mean, hey man, I mean I committed to the exasperation, that’s for sure.

Isaac starred in three Star Wars movies, including The Force Awakens (2015), The Last Jedi (2017), and The Rise of Skywalker (2019). The scene, especially Dameron’s line, which eventually turned into meme material, focused on Sheev Palpatine. He’s an iconic and most important antagonist who leads Anakin Skywalker to turn to the dark side and embrace his new identity as Darth Vader.

The decision to tease Palpatine’s resurrection without setting the stage first didn’t sit well with fans and critics. While Isaac didn’t dive into other changes that took place during the movie’s post-production, his brief comment captured how he felt about the situation. Do you think that the Frankenstein actor’s frustration is justified? Let us know your thoughts in the comments.
