Ariana Grande is a global pop icon with multiple best-selling albums to her name. In recent years, she has faced snubs in many major categories at the Grammys. For some time now, fans have been crying foul over her missing out on the prestigious awards, and now the Recording Academy has responded to Ariana Grande fans, addressing their concerns.

Grammy nominations are peer-driven review process, says Recording Academy

There have been longstanding tensions between Ariana Grande and the Recording Academy. Lately, fans have not hesitated to point out that the Grammys are undervaluing her vocal talent and artistic impact by overlooking her in major categories like Album of the Year and Record of the Year, despite putting out critically acclaimed albums such as Positions and Eternal Sunshine.

In response, the Recording Academy has put out a statement in its defense, stating that the selection process for Grammy nominations is peer-driven and that developments are underway to make it more transparent. It further noted that music fans should support artists’ rights.

“Every GRAMMY nomination is determined by peer reviews. That means fellow musicians, producers, songwriters, and other music industry professionals who are Academy members cast the votes. It’s a process led entirely by artists’ peers and we’re always looking for ways to make it more transparent. What can you do as a fan? Support artist rights,” the statement issued by the Recording Academy read.

However, the singer and the Grammy organizers have been at loggerheads since 2019. Grande did not perform at the Grammy ceremony in 2019 after a dispute with producers who refused to let her perform her hit 7 Rings, arguing that she could only do it as part of a medley and that producers had to choose the other songs. She accused the producers of lying and restricting her creative control.

The public fallout from the 2019 incident has shaped the perception that she might have fallen out of favor with the Recording Academy. Many fans have pointed out that even though her recent albums have strong streaming numbers and cultural impact, continual snubs for major nominations reek of industry politics.
