The rising use of artificial intelligence in the creative space remains under scrutiny. We recently saw the internet’s mixed reaction to people turning their snaps into Studio Ghibli art. At the end of the day, it’s all about being ethical and respectful towards artists and taking accountability. With many Hollywood stars having welcomed such a viewpoint, legendary Sandra Bullock has also chimed in. While voicing her support, the diva made sure to acknowledge both its potential and risks.

Sandra Bullock backs AI’s growing role in Hollywood

During her appearance at the CNBC Changemakers Summit, Sandra Bullock was asked about AI-generated fan trailers for Practical Magic 2. Produced by Bullock under Warner Brothers, the project will feature her in the lead role alongside big names such as Nicole Kidman, Joey King, and Maisie Williams. While reacting to those unofficial trailers, Sandra embraced AI technology in movies while sounding cautious.

Well, there could be worse with my image. Sorry,” Bullock joked. “But it’s here. We have to observe it. We have to understand it. We have to lean into it. We have to use it in a really constructive and creative way, make it our friend. We have to be incredibly cautious and aware of it because there are people who will use it for evil and not good. I do feel that there’s a place for it.”

After Bullock’s careful yet lucid response, Warner Bros. Motion Pictures CEO Pam Abdy followed suit. She admitted the technology is “not great,” potentially citing unethical use of identity in filmmaking. But at the same time, Abdy believes it’s “exciting,” and that’s what keeps the people locked in. She thinks people would like to experiment and engage with AI-driven projects.

Now, let’s turn our focus to Practical Magic 2, which follows the story of siblings Sally (Bullock) and Gillian Owens (Kidman) dealing with a 300-year-old family curse. After Sally’s daughter gains supernatural powers, the Owens arrive in the UK only to come face to face with their ancestor’s past as they attempt to get rid of the curse. Interestingly, Practical Magic 2 brings Bullock and Kidman together on screen years after the first part dropped in 1998.

Warner Bros. Pictures announced the second chapter at CinemaCon in Las Vegas this week, confirming Bullock and Kidman’s reunion. Meanwhile, SAG-AFTRA has supported the AI framework led by Donald Trump’s regime. The framework calls for Congress to enact legislation that includes intellectual property rights protection, First Amendment rights, expanding AI workforce development, and encouraging parental controls.

The ongoing debate over AI’s involvement in filmmaking isn’t likely to slow down anytime soon. In the meantime, please drop your thoughts on the matter.
