Steve Martino has once again made it clear that he has no interest in keeping the Peanutsgang in their small-town neighborhood forever. According to the director, the time has come for Charlie Brown and his friends to see the world, and keeping them at home for another movie would not feel right.

Steve Martino says the Peanuts gang is going on an ‘epic adventure’ to the big city

Speaking about the future of the franchise at Apple TV+, Martino said the goal was always to take the characters somewhere they have never been before.

We are taking the Peanuts gang on an epic adventure to the Big City,” Martino explained.

He added that moving the production to WildBrain Studios for this new feature made the transition into a larger setting even easier. “Do you want to see them just doing the same things in the same backyard? No.”

For Martino, the movie is inseparable from the themes of friendship and the feeling of being an underdog in a massive world.

He has repeatedly said he has no interest in changing the art style that fans loved in the 2015 film, even though the animation is being handled by a new team.

In his view, any version of the Peanuts that doesn’t feel like the original Charles Schulz drawings would simply fall short.

Apple TV+ has also become more outspoken about protecting the series’ legacy. They reportedly signed a massive deal to keep the franchise on their platform until 2030, ensuring that no new specials or films happen without their approval.

Recently, the producers joked that their answer to why they chose a city setting is that Charlie Brown finally needs a bigger challenge than a kite-eating tree.

Despite the humour, they said they truly believe that too many modern reboots ruin their characters by making them too edgy, whereas they want to keep the gang earnest and kind.

Instead, Martino believes the core idea of the gang learning the “true meaning of friendship” while meeting new friends in the city remains the perfect setup for this sequel.

Although the film is still in production for a projected 2027 release, the creators have continued expanding the world in other ways. They are overseeing the “Snoopy Presents” specials, which they see as a companion to the upcoming movie rather than a replacement.

The studio is also reportedly working on a new retrospective project titled 75 Years of Peanuts, which is expected to be released in 2026 and look back at the making and legacy of the comic strip and its many films.
