The Princess Diaries 3 is officially in development, and Anne Hathaway is set to reprise her iconic role as Princess Mia Thermopolis. The film is set to be directed by Adele Lim, but there is no release date as of yet. In a recent interview, Mandy Moore, who played the antagonist in the first film, revealed that she would be open to returning to the franchise.

Mandy Moore wants “redemptive arc” if she reprises role in The Princess Diaries

Entertainment Tonight recently caught up with Mandy Moore and spoke about her possible return to The Princess Diaries 3. The interviewer asked if there was a third movie where Moore’s character, Lana Thomas, would “come together” again with Anne Hathaway’s character. However, she dismissed that idea by stating that this was “new information,” while acknowledging that she had heard a third movie was being made.

“You are giving me new information. I heard there is a third movie… That’s what I have heard, but just as much as the internet has heard,” she stated.

The actress further confirmed that she has not been approached to reprise her role in the upcoming iteration of the iconic franchise.

“No one is blowing me up. But I would come back,” she added, noting that her character deserves a chance at redemption. “I feel like my character needs a redemptive arc. Something humbling.”

Although Moore’s comments do not confirm her involvement, they do signal interest and a fresh angle for her character. Moore’s character was a high school snob who played the antagonist opposite Anne Hathaway’s Mia Thermopolis. While Lana was known for her mean-girl persona, the actress now believes there is room to evolve the character.

The plot details of the third movie are largely under wraps, and the full cast has not yet been confirmed. “As a diehard fan of the original Princess Diaries, I’m beyond excited to be a part of bringing the third iteration of this beloved franchise to life,” a statement issued by Lim read, adding, “We look forward to celebrating its core tenets of female power, joy and mentorship with audiences worldwide.”

Some reports suggest that the movie is still in pre-production, and fans may have to wait a little longer for major updates.
