Taika Waititi is bringing his next major project to theaters later this year. Sony Pictures confirmed at CinemaCon that Klara and the Sun will release on October 23, 2026, alongside debuting its first trailer. The film stars Jenna Ortega as the titular “Artificial Friend,” giving audiences an early look at the emotional sci-fi story.

Trailer showcases emotional tone and introduces the main cast

From the preview footage presented at CinemaCon, a dystopian world where a solar-powered robot named Klara observes people from within a store in her attempt to figure out a way to be considered a good match comes into focus. Mia Tharia takes on the role of a young girl who picks Klara, with Amy Adams portraying her mother.

The tone of the movie seems quite emotional, with a song called “I Got You Babe” softly playing in the background.

Based on the book by Kazuo Ishiguro, the movie has been under production for several years. The initial plan was to have it released at some point earlier, but Waititi assured everyone that the movie had been finished and would soon be ready for viewers.

Among supporting actors are Steve Buscemi, Natasha Lyonne, and Simon Baker.

As for the release date, the movie is set to hit theaters right during the awards season. With a book by a Nobel Prize winner on its back, the movie is expected to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival before going into theaters, just like Jojo Rabbit did.
