George R.R Martin’s publisher on The Winds of Winter’s fate

George R.R. Martin’s publisher recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the rumors circulating about the novel’s release. He said, “The online chatter you are seeing regarding a supposed leak is false.”

For context, the rumor started when an X user, Ned Stark, posted a tweet on April 12 claiming TWOW will be announced soon. They shared a photo of a 4chan post where an anonymous account claims to be a production assistant.

They also claimed that Martin finished it in late 2025 and handed the manuscript in 2025. Fans’ response to this was mainly divided; while some questioned it, others anticipated the release of the much-awaited novel.

Martin’s publisher, who works for Bantam Books, the publishing house behind A Song of Ice and Fire, debunked it eventually. It’s also important to consider the fact that there have been consistent delays when it comes to Winds of Winter.

The author himself admitted that the novel is 13 years late in an interview with TIME in 2025. When asked if he could tell where that project is, Martin said:

“Well, that’s the curse of my life here. There’s no doubt Winds of Winter is 13 years late. I’m still working on it. I have periods where I make progress and then other things divert my attention, and suddenly, I’m working on HBO shows where I have a deadline.”

Winds of Winter explores the aftermath of the events that happened after the Dance of Dragons. It features fast-paced battles and high stakes, but that’s not all.

Martin started working on this novel in 2010, and it has surely been more than a decade. It is but natural to meander through the course of the creative process, but it means one thing. The audience will have to wait until the author himself confirms the update officially. Martin has yet to make a statement regarding the matter as of yet.
