HBO’s Harry Potter series promotion and trailers are in full swing, and the same goes for the casting. The series features a vibrant cast of actors, and the newest one to join the Wizarding World is Tilda Swinton. She even got blessings from the OG Harry Potter actor, Ralph Fiennes.
Ralph Fiennes wishes Tilda Swinton for her Harry Potter role
Ralph Fiennes recently appeared on the BBC’s Claudia Winkleman Show. He was asked about whether he would return to the series, to which he said he doesn’t think so. When asked about Tilda Swinton’s casting in the series, he said: “She would be fantastic.”
The Doctor Strange and Narnia star is reportedly joining the Harry Potter TV series, according to some sources. Her casting, however, hasn’t been made official as of yet, though it has caused an uproar on social media.
Fans, be they readers and viewers, aren’t taking it well. They deemed the casting as ‘too woke,’ and this comes after Papa Essiedu being cast in the role of Snape. This, for most fans, was a disrespectful move, while others remained divided.
There were reports of Cillian Murphy joining the show as well. The reason is that the Peaky Blinders actor was mainly put forth as an ideal fan casting for the role of Voldemort.
So far, HBO CEO Casey Bloys has not made any comment on this report whatsoever. He even admitted to the fact that there hasn’t been any actor cast in the role of Voldemort, so these are purely rumors, come to think of it.
As for Tilda Swinton, the actress is known to have said no to the role of Sybil Trelawny in the Harry Potter movie. She spoke to Scot magazine, where she expressed her dislike for boarding school and how the Harry Potter franchise seems to glorify that, saying:
I dislike films like ‘Harry Potter,’ which tend to romanticize such places. I think they are a very cruel setting in which to grow up, and I don’t feel children benefit from that type of education.”
The actress has so far not commented on her rumored role in the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, which will be released on 25th December 2026.
