Anne Hathaway has everyone stunned with her upcoming film Mother Mary. The dark, brooding, and carnal elements are what make the film alluring and enchanting, but hold up, that’s not all. The film drew inspiration from Taylor Swift, and here’s everything you need to know!
Mother Mary director cites Taylor Swift as an inspiration
Mother Mary Director David Lowery spoke to Empire about the film’s inspiration and, most importantly, influence. He opened up about recreating the concert scenes inspired by Swift’s Reputation tour.
“Her Reputation concert film is one of the best concert films ever. It’s truly phenomenal. And for our concert sequences, we looked at that repeatedly/ You would not believe the amount of time we were talking about Taylor.”
The red and black hues blend in well with the character’s persona. It adds to the charm and mystery surrounding the film’s plot. The trailer is a celebration of the central character, Mother Mary, a pop icon who finds fame and fortune, yet she has yet to reinvent herself.
What stood out the most in the trailer is the stunning bodysuit and celestial headgear that elevate the characters’ aura. These are designed by Bina Daigeler. For her Reputation concert, too, Swift wore an iconic black bodysuit. The contrast between the two artists, however, is still there. Where Hathaway projects a blend of gothic yet divine vibes through her stage presence, Swift has a more femme fatale take to it.
The trailer, the music, the actors, and the entire process itself are visually stunning. Its second trailer has now secured around 2 million views, and it looks promising, but there’s more.
Mother Mary features tracks by Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX, and FKA Twigs. The film also stars Twigs in one of the supporting roles alongside Michaela Coel and Hunter Schafer.
Aside from the cast, the movie blends occult elements in a true psychological horror fashion. The trailer explores themes of identity, awakening, and reinvention, along with loss and carnage. It’s about Mother Mary working in tandem with Sam, played by Coel, to rediscover herself.
Mother Mary is scheduled for release on April 17th, 2026.
