It appears that John Lithgow will stick to his decision regarding his participation in the new Harry Potter TV adaptation produced by HBO Max despite the current controversy about author J.K. Rowling. Lithgow said during an interview that although he strongly disagrees with many of Rowling’s opinions, some parts of her views have been “misunderstood” and “twisted” by society. The 80-year-old actor confirmed that many of his friends and activists advised him not to be a part of the show because of his previous negative opinion of Rowling, but he decided otherwise.
Why Lithgow is sticking to his decision about taking part in Harry Potter?
While Lithgow did consider dropping out of the series after hearing opinions of those who know him well enough, he decided not to. Firstly, he believes that the books should not be associated with the ongoing discussion since they are “a meditation on kindness and acceptance” and “contain no trace of transphobic sensitivity.”
Secondly, although the author has “doubled down” on her beliefs, Lithgow says that the majority of discussions about Rowling were “distorted” beyond recognition. This statement is different from what Lithgow expressed previously when calling Rowling’s views “inexplicable.”
Moreover, Lithgow admits that he has never had a conversation with Rowling before, so his choice was based on something other than the discussion he had heard about previously. First of all, he saw his cooperation with showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod in this project as interesting. He also emphasized that playing one single character for a whole decade is the best way to provide financial stability to yourself and your family.
This latest statement caused another discussion online. People claim that Lithgow puts his career ahead of the issues about which he was so passionate previously, but there are also people who think he is right about what he said.
As far as the production is concerned, the premiere is still scheduled for Christmas Day 2026, with Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout playing the main roles.
