Hiro Mashima has once again made it clear that he has no interest in letting the fire die out for Fairy Tail. According to the franchise’s creator, the story never really ended where people thought it did, and bringing it back for the 20th anniversary just felt like the right move.
Hiro Mashima says the guild doors will never truly close on ‘Fairy Tail’
Speaking about the future of the franchise, Mashima said the milestone of two decades was always meant to lead to something bigger.
“I put the end at the end of the original run because it was a milestone,” Mashima explained. He added that once he saw how the global fanbase kept growing, it made the decision even easier.
“Do you want to see a world without the Fairy Tail guild?” Mashima said. “The answer is no.”
For Mashima, the series is inseparable from Natsu and the chaotic family dynamic of the characters. He has repeatedly said he has no interest in changing the core vibe or making a reboot that feels too polished.
In his view, any new version would simply be compared to the original and fall short.
Mashima has also become more outspoken about protecting the series’ legacy. He reportedly has a tight grip on the production with Kodansha and A-1 Pictures that prevents any sequel or spin-off from happening without his direct approval.
Recently, Mashima joked that his answer to people demanding he finally move on from Fairy Tail is simply to keep drawing more. Despite the humor, he said he truly believes that too many modern franchises ruin their endings by trying to be too serious, whereas Fairy Tail stays true to itself by being messy and fun.
Instead, Mashima believes the final panels of the original manga, when the team sets off on the “100 Years Quest,” remain the perfect setup.
Although the main series reached its initial conclusion, Mashima has continued expanding the franchise in other ways. He is overseeing the 100 Years Quest anime, which he sees as a companion to the original story rather than a replacement.
Mashima is also reportedly working on a new retrospective project titled Guild Memories, which is expected to be released in 2026 and look back at the making and legacy of the series.
