If there’s one thing common between Stephen Colbert and Bill Hader, it’s their acclaim. Both are esteemed artists and comedians known for their comedy sketches and contributions to SNL. Hader may have exited the show, but his decision made an impact on Colbert, and here’s how.

Stephen Colbert showers praise for Bill Hader

In a conversation with Will Arnett and Sean Hayes on the Smartless podcast, Colbert revealed his new project and plans after the cancellation of his show. He also praised Bill Hader for his move, saying:

The thing that really struck me is, you know what [Bill] Hader did when he left ‘SNL’? He went and wrote for ‘South Park’ for a season. I said, ‘Man, that’s the perfect thing to do.’ Just go serve something that you love already.”

Bill Hader left SNL after featuring on the show for more than a decade. He cited personal reasons and a need to venture out and pursue new creative opportunities, as some sources suggested.

It was later on that Hader revealed that he was struggling mentally. There were anxiety and panic attacks that happened behind the scenes, which most viewers were completely unaware of. He spoke about the issues in an interview with The Wrap in 2018.

I get kind of anxious, especially when I’m in front of a big group of people. I had this ability to do impressions and voices and stuff like that, and if you have that ability, the height of that is to be on Saturday Night Live. I got that job, which changed my life, but then the irony was that doing the show was really hard for me because I had a lot of anxiety doing it, but it was taking its toll physically and mentally.

Hader went on to work on a variety of projects across genres, be it screenplays or voice acting. He recently voiced the role of Cat in the movie The Cat in the Hat, produced by Warner Bros.

Colbert is also currently working on the film. The Lord of the Rings: Shadows of the Past, as a writer, is in the pre-production stages.
