Amazon has confirmed that the long-gestating RoboCop series is no longer just a promise. Specifically, according to a new report, Peter Friedlander, Amazon’s head of global television, has officially given the green light to a full series reboot of the beloved 1987 sci-fi franchise for Prime Video.

Amazon’s RoboCop series moves from development to a full series order at Prime Video

The greenlight was first reported by The Ankler, which detailed Friedlander’s early moves in the role and confirmed that the RoboCop revival, which had been quietly sitting in development since 2023, has now crossed the finish line into an official series order.

As previously announced, the plot will follow a premise very familiar to fans of the original.

A giant tech conglomerate teams up with a local police department to introduce a technologically advanced enforcer to combat rising crime, described simply as “a police officer who’s part man, part machine.

Peter Ocko, who has previously written for The Office, Lodge 49, and Black Sails, is on board as showrunner, writer, and executive producer.

Horror maestro James Wan of The Conjuring and Aquaman fame will executive produce the project through his Atomic Monster banner alongside Michael Clear and Rob Hackett.

The timing of the green light is significant.

The franchise has been completely off screens since the 2014 Joel Kinnaman reboot, which failed to win over either critics or fans. Kinnaman himself later reflected on what went wrong, saying, “I think that movie would have done better if we had listened more to the fans beforehand.

Original RoboCop star Peter Weller has made clear he would not be opposed to some involvement either, telling press earlier this year, “I would do anything if the script is good and the money’s right.

It remains unclear at this stage whether the new series will connect to the original films or serve as a complete standalone reboot. A production start date has not yet been announced.
